Taking part in ICAD Upstarts is a fantastic experience for a young creative (you can read more about the programme itself here). I’d always heard that it was the best way for junior creatives to get their names out there, work on exciting briefs and meet people in the industry.

For the sixth and final Upstarts brief, we had to pitch an idea for a video to promote our exhibition, the theme was ‘Ripe’. For this final video pitch, the competition was tough, and all of the ideas presented were very strong, but I was lucky enough to have my idea selected. The core thought of the idea is that there is hype surrounding the ICAD Upstarts every year, everyone wants to get their hands on the freshest creative talent for their agency. But there aren’t enough Upstarts for every agency. So the idea was based on creative directors going shopping to get some ‘ripe and ready’ fresh creatives before they’re sold out.

Developing and filming the promo video was a brilliant experience, and it was great to have big names involved. Damien O’Donnell is a fantastic director who really brought the idea to life. Russell Curran Productions produced the piece, and it was edited in Screen Scene. If you missed it you can see the final result here:

The Exhibition

The “Ripe” exhibition gave us all a chance to display our favourite pieces from the Upstarts series.  The opening night of the exhibition took place on Wednesday November 4th in the Lighthouse cinema, running as part of Design Week 2015. A total of 19 ‘ripe and ready’ Upstarts from the advertising and design streams each selected one piece of work to exhibit, along with our portfolios and freshly-printed business cards.

There was a really nice variety of work from both streams, which included everything from digital, activations, apps and social content to radio and print, and it was clear the standard this year was really high.

The exhibition was beautifully branded, including a lovely catalogue showcasing our work, and everyone agreed the entire event was a resounding success with a great turn out from all branches of the industry.

If you missed the exhibition, check out some photos of the event below! Credit to Stephen O’Neil for the photography.
